Grandview Pl Park concept design released

I am pleased to announce that Council has now awarded the contract for Grandview Pl Park with construction to commence shortly after the design is refined.

The new playground is set in a native colour scheme, and comes with a massive 6 metre slide that will run down the infamous hill.

It will also include shade sails, although these are not shown on the above rendering as the design for them has not yet been finalised.

Multiple parks to receive shade sails in new program

I’m pleased to announce that multiple parks across the ward will be receiving shade sails as part of Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner’s new Sun Safe Suburban Playgrounds program.

The $10 million, three-year effort will ensure that there is shade at every playground in Brisbane, protecting parents, carers, and kids while potentially saving lives as Council looks to reduce sun exposure.

More than 40 playgrounds will be retrofitted across the city with shade covers under the program with three local suppliers contracted to manufacture the sails across the city

Kerbside collection dates 2023

Kerbside collection is back in Chandler Ward, this year starting in the first week of March.

The schedule can be found in the photo above or alternatively at the bottom of this article as well as some quick collection guidelines and acceptable items list.

For those that are new or are unfamiliar with kerbside collection, it’s Council’s large item collection service that gathers unwanted household items that are often too big for wheelie bins (and too hard to take to the tip).

Grandview Pl Park playground replacement

Some residents may remember that the playground at Grandview Place Park had been fenced off for many months.

Council officers assessed the tree in November last year and found that the Crow’s Ash Tree which the playground sits beneath is becoming unstable and recommended the playground be removed.

Despite the removal, I’m pleased to advise that I have secured funding for the playground to be replaced this financial year.

Bulimba Creek Bikeway reconstruction

The Bulimba Creek Bikeway is an important part of our active transport infrastructure in the eastern suburbs with thousands of residents from all walks of life utilising it every day.

As the eastern suburbs grow, so does our need for bigger and better active transport infrastructure, especially as eMobility devices take the world by storm.

I’m proud to announce that as part of Council’s 2022/23 Budget, we are investing $275,000 into reconstructing the Baynes St to Breadsell St section of the Bulimba Creek Bikeway.

Footpath repairs across Chandler

This month Council has been repairing a large number of footpaths across the Chandler Ward, with numerous repairs taking place in Wakerley, Mansfield, Carindale and Mt Gravatt East.

I thought I may take the time to share some statistics and information on how Council maintains its footpaths.

This financial year, Council has put a record $30 million towards the reconstruction and maintenance of our existing network in order to bring our footpath network back up after the damage done during the February 2022 floods.

Construction of new shade sails at Bill McFarlane Park

Over the last year, I have received multiple requests for the playground in Bill McFarlane Park (off Olsen Cres) to be shaded, and I’m happy to say that new shade sails will be installed soon.

This $157,000 investment will see more than 500m2 of area shaded with commercial grade UV blocking fabric, covering both playground nodes.

More shade means cooler play equipment and less exposure to the harsh Queensland sun, making the playground safer for kids to play, learn and grow.

Design work underway for upgrade of Molle, New Cleveland and Green Camp Rd intersection

One of the most exciting projects of the 2022-23 Council Budget is the preliminary design for the Molle, New Cleveland and Green Camp Rd intersection which received $447,000 in funding.

Green Camp Rd and New Cleveland Rd are crucial corridors in Brisbane’s eastern suburbs and this upgrade will look to drastically improve the safety of this dangerous intersection.

I receive plenty of requests, however this would have to be one of the most frequent, with many residents in the eastern suburbs writing to me over the course of my tenure in Council.
