Donnington Street Speed Increase Survey

I am seeking your feedback regarding a proposal to increase the speed limit on Donnington Street, Carindale from 50 km/hr to 60 km/hr.

Donnington Street has historically attracted speed limit compliance issues due to its width and its function as a connection between Winstanley Street and Creek Road. In response Council has implemented several speed awareness measures, including;

·   50 km/hr pavement markings at both approaches

·   Repeater speed signs

·   a Speed Awareness Monitor (SAM) sign footing

However, driver behaviour is generally influenced more by the road environment than the posted speed limit alone and compliance with the posted speed limit remains low.

Donnington Street has a wide and open cross-section, including wide traffic lanes and shoulders, operates as a bus route, and functions as a higher-order district road. These factors typically support higher operating speeds, and, from a driver’s perspective, the road presents more like a 60 km/hr environment than a lower-order neighbourhood street.

Council officers have assessed this proposal and support the proposed increase; however, I believe that this change can only proceed here with the approval of residents in and around Donnington Street.

Should residents support the increase, I will forward the change request to the State Government’s Speed Management Committee for support and implementation.
