The last few years have seen a rise in complaints about traffic and parking issues surrounding both Mansfield State schools.

Many residents are experiencing hazardous road situations and lengthy waits due to the large amounts of traffic coming through Ham Rd and Broadwater Road at school times, with the surrounding streets turning into a parking lot during pickup and drop off hours.

Working with both schools, Council has put in place traffic management plans in order to manage the situation, however it’s becoming clear that the existing road infrastructure is reaching breaking point.

The State Government continues to facilitate unchecked growth in both schools and but ignores the parking situation. Here are a few statistics about the schools:

  • Mansfield State School exceeds their maximum capacity by nearly 40%

  • Mansfield State High School exceeds their maximum capacity by more than 25%

  • The State Government continues to encourage the growth of the school but doesn’t invest in local infrastructure

I know that residents are frustrated with the traffic situation that’s developed.

Council is prepared to invest in road infrastructure in the community, just take a look at what we’re doing at Newnham and Wecker Road.

The big question is, when will the State Government?

The State Government in recent years has splurged $60M on school buildings and infrastructure inside the school, but not a dollar has gone into managing the traffic flows and impact this is having on the local community.

So I’m asking you to have your say on the Mansfield Area Traffic Survey (MATS), to indicate your support (or opposition) for initiatives to help ease traffic congestion.

This includes;

  • Placing an enrolment cap on Mansfield SS & SHS

  • Truck bans on Ham Road

  • Improved pickup & set-down bays for Citipointe Christian College

The survey will run from 10 September 2020 to 17 October 2020 and is open to all residents of Mansfield & Carindale.
