Historic Belmont Tramway Signs in Carindale

To help preserve the history of the Belmont Tramway, Council has installed information signs at locations of the old stops along Old Cleveland Road.

These signs provide unique facts and historical information about the tramway operation and feature artwork from the talented students at Seven Hills State School.

HISTORY OF THE TRAMWAY

Opening on May 25, 1912, the private rail built by the then Belmont Shire Council ran through Carina, Camp Hill, Seven Hills and Norman Park. It operated from 1912-1926 and carried thousands of hardworking residents from the eastern suburbs.

In 1948, the 664 metres of track bed along Old Cleveland Road became part of the Brisbane City Council Valley to Belmont electric tram route, which remained open until its closure in 1969.
