A few weeks ago, I had the honour of officially opening the Wakerley District Sports Park with Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, Cr Lisa Atwood and Netball Queensland CEO Catherine Clark.

Work has now been completed on the $7.2 million project with Wynnum Manly District Meals on Wheels successfully moving into the building in May. The first netball game was played on the new courts in early July.

I had a great time celebrating the opening and thanking the project team involved in completing this fantastic new community facility that has been years in the making. The rain held back just long enough for us to cut the ribbon on the new netball courts.

The park will soon be renamed in recognition of local identity, Bill McFarlane, and his service to women's sport, Meals on Wheels and the Wynnum Manly Community.

I launched a petition in July to rename the new sports park to "Bill McFarlane Park" and upon closing it had received 217 signatures.

Without the generosity of Bill McFarlane gifting this land to Meals on Wheels and his push for a land transfer, the development of this important community and sports facility would not have been possible. It is only fitting that Council name this new sports park in his honour.
